[00:00:41] Speaker B: Welcome, everybody, to episode three, season three of the Bama Balance.
It's so great to see you all again here today. How about that game this past weekend? I guess the game would be two weekends ago. Two weekends ago, right? Yeah.
[00:00:56] Speaker C: Awesome.
[00:00:57] Speaker B: You think?
[00:00:58] Speaker C: Let's start. I like it.
[00:00:59] Speaker B: I thought it was a good start.
I mean, overall put us in a good position to.
To have a good start this season. There's some stuff we need to work on, I think.
[00:01:11] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:01:12] Speaker B: To tighten up on.
[00:01:13] Speaker C: I think.
I think that's everybody, though.
[00:01:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:16] Speaker C: I thought it was funny watching smu, Florida State the other night. First of all, holy cow with the light situation.
[00:01:22] Speaker B: What's up with that? Did Seminoles not pay their light bill?
[00:01:25] Speaker C: But probably not.
[00:01:27] Speaker D: Probably getting ready for Norville's buyout.
[00:01:30] Speaker C: I don't know, dude. They beat us.
They beat us again. He's probably staying, man.
[00:01:35] Speaker B: Dude, don't.
[00:01:36] Speaker D: I won't say what I'm. About what I was about to say.
[00:01:38] Speaker B: Right. Because we've got that. I doubt that what happened. We've got that game coming up.
[00:01:42] Speaker C: Yeah, but you could just see that, like smu, the like first game, you just have so many things that. Little things that you have to get. Right. They still found a way to.
I'm not sure if that is just like great on SMU's part or awful on Florida State's part, but that was. I mean, Florida State should have won that game.
[00:02:01] Speaker B: I thought so, too. I thought so, too. Who was the most surprising of all the games the. That first week?
[00:02:08] Speaker D: There's one answer. Some of the most surprising.
[00:02:10] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:02:10] Speaker D: There's only one answer.
[00:02:11] Speaker C: I don't even know if it's that surprising.
[00:02:13] Speaker D: Western Michigan and Michigan.
[00:02:16] Speaker C: I'm going. Different answer.
[00:02:17] Speaker D: No,
[00:02:19] Speaker B: that was surprising in and of itself because of the call.
[00:02:22] Speaker D: Not only. Not only, like Western Michigan really beating them in the way they did.
[00:02:27] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:28] Speaker D: That alone would have been surprising. But also the fact that. That there was.
[00:02:32] Speaker B: That call.
[00:02:32] Speaker D: That was nuts, in my opinion. I'm still kind of mad. I hate Michigan, though, so there's that
[00:02:39] Speaker B: there was another game.
[00:02:40] Speaker C: Auburn.
[00:02:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:41] Speaker D: Wait, that was. Yeah, I kind of thought they were going to light Baylor up. I'm not going to lie.
[00:02:46] Speaker C: Well, supposed to be really good quarterback's supposed to be a Heisman runner. We'll see. Yeah, they've got a lot of tough football left.
[00:02:54] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:54] Speaker D: How about that decision to go for two, though?
[00:02:56] Speaker B: No. Why? Do you. No, no.
[00:02:59] Speaker C: I mean, really?
[00:03:01] Speaker D: Yeah. Because I'm. If it's a. Granted just to your point, it is a lot, but if it's a better throw, that's a, you know, throw behind them that they score.
[00:03:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:03:11] Speaker C: It's the same, though.
Last year, Central was playing Thompson at Central.
Cam Coleman's little Brother throws like five interceptions in this game.
Thompson's up like 35, 21. Central scores two touchdowns to get it within kick. Field goal. You send this thing to overtime at home, go for two. I don't like that call. I think when you're on the road, though, go for two and try to end it. Don't send it over time.
[00:03:42] Speaker B: Well, I think that that's not a bad call, but.
[00:03:45] Speaker C: Yeah, awful. Not a great throw. Yeah.
[00:03:48] Speaker B: Yeah, that's not a bad call if you look at it that way. So we got a game coming up this coming weekend.
We'll. By the time this drops.
Well, no, we'll know what our fate is against Kentucky. But the next game is Florida State, right? Is that on the.
[00:04:06] Speaker C: Yeah, Florida State will be Florida state Saturday after 230 releases.
[00:04:09] Speaker B: Yeah.
What are we thinking about that?
[00:04:12] Speaker C: Feel good about both of them.
[00:04:13] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:14] Speaker C: But I think it's gonna be tough playing SEC game week two on the road.
[00:04:18] Speaker B: That's. That's a tough schedule, and I don't
[00:04:21] Speaker C: think Lexington's like that easy of a place to play in. Like, I could think of a lot of other SEC stadiums I'd rather go to week two than there.
[00:04:29] Speaker B: When was the last time we played there?
[00:04:31] Speaker D: I can't remember last time he played Bear. Bryce Young was Noah's Milroe 23.
[00:04:37] Speaker C: Yeah, that's right. It was cold late in the season.
[00:04:40] Speaker D: And then the last time we. This is the last time we just played them in general.
[00:04:43] Speaker E: Right.
[00:04:44] Speaker D: The last time we played on my home was 20 with Mac.
[00:04:46] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, the COVID year. Okay.
[00:04:49] Speaker D: 63 to 3. If that's the outcome, I'd love. I'd love that.
[00:04:52] Speaker B: That was. That was an amazing year.
Right. So.
[00:04:56] Speaker D: I don't know.
[00:04:57] Speaker B: I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm excited about our team. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do and also excited for this season too. You know, this is our third episode, season three three three. Which is once in a lifetime thing.
But very excited because we're. We'll be welcoming our first guest of the season in our next segment and we'll. We're delighted to have him here to have her have her here.
And we can't wait to introduce you to her. And we'll be doing that in the next segment. Stay tuned. This is the BAMA Balance Real stories about college students mental health.

And welcome back to the BAMA Balance podcast. Real stories about college students mental health.
I'm really excited to introduce our guest this week. It's Mary Kate Foster, the SGA president for.
Oh my Lord, why am I forgetting Belonging, Belonging and wellness. I almost said capstone wellness is for, but I was like that's not what the title is.
But Mary Kay Foster, the head SJ president of belonging and wellness, vice president, sorry. Belonging and wellness. Thank you for being here. Thank you for coming on. We're excited to have you and get to talk about some of the things you're doing over there.
[00:07:10] Speaker E: Thank y' all so much for having me. I'm so excited.
[00:07:13] Speaker B: No, it's great to have you here. Tell us a little bit about yourself, Mary Kate.
[00:07:16] Speaker C: Where are you?
[00:07:17] Speaker B: Where are you from?
[00:07:18] Speaker E: Well, my name's Mary Kate. I'm a junior from Fairhope, Alabama and yeah, I'm a KD here at Alabama and I serve as vice president for belonging to wellness and sga. I absolutely love it.
It's been so fun. Such a cool little roller coaster in SGA and yeah, I love it. It's super fun.
[00:07:38] Speaker B: What? So let me ask you this.
There are a number of students who I know who are from Fairhope Mobile area.
Our very own Calvin Hughes legend. Legendary Calvin Hughes. Calvin, if you're out there, we want you here to co host or something. But is from Fairhope.
Who else was I talking to the other day?
[00:08:05] Speaker D: Well, I mean the legend Alumni.
[00:08:08] Speaker B: I was going to hold off for him.
[00:08:10] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: So former co. Founder of the Bama Balance, Johnny Foster.
[00:08:13] Speaker E: Yes.
[00:08:14] Speaker B: Any relation to you?
[00:08:16] Speaker E: Well, he's actually my brother.
[00:08:18] Speaker B: My brother.
[00:08:20] Speaker D: You don't see.
[00:08:22] Speaker B: And then there's another Foster here.
[00:08:24] Speaker E: There is Harrison. He's a sophomore.
[00:08:26] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:08:27] Speaker E: Yes, sir. He loves it.
[00:08:28] Speaker B: And what's he up to now?
[00:08:30] Speaker E: He is a capstone man. He absolutely loves it. He's always running around. I'm sure y' all probably seen. Y' all have probably seen him around, but he loves it so much.
[00:08:40] Speaker B: I've never met him. Have you met him, Brooksie?
[00:08:42] Speaker A: Or ever?
[00:08:42] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:08:43] Speaker E: Oh, I need to introduce y'. All.
[00:08:44] Speaker B: Yeah. He's not running around in our circles. Or maybe we're just not in his circle.
[00:08:48] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm probably not in his circle.
[00:08:50] Speaker B: I think that's the thing.
[00:08:52] Speaker E: Oh, I definitely need to introduce y'. All.
[00:08:54] Speaker B: How did you get involved with sga?
[00:08:56] Speaker E: Well, it started, honestly, Johnny encouraged me. And at first I was like, no, I don't want to do SGA because Johnny was pressuring me to do it so much. And I was like, I don't want to do what Johnny wants to make me do.
And I got to college and I was like, you know what? I really want to try as much as I can. I kind of want to branch out, do something different.
And I tried out for first year council and I got it, which was such a blessing, such an amazing experience. But all praise, like, all thanks to Johnny. He's there. He is.
[00:09:34] Speaker A: Literally.
[00:09:34] Speaker E: He convinced me. So I'm so happy. It was a great start. And from there, I became a senator for the College of Arts and Sciences. And I served as the head of the Belonging and Wellness Committee and Senate. And I loved it.
And now I'm where I am. I love it.
[00:09:52] Speaker B: That's wonderful. That's wonderful.
[00:09:54] Speaker C: I do have a quick question. What are you studying?
[00:09:57] Speaker E: I am a psychology major and my minor is HR management. So it's kind of two different things. But I kind of wanted to.
I kind of wanted my minor to be a little different than my major just to, you know, have two options in case something falls through.
[00:10:13] Speaker B: Makes total sense.
[00:10:14] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:10:15] Speaker B: Makes total sense.
[00:10:16] Speaker C: That's what I did.
[00:10:18] Speaker B: How was it then that you got connected to Belonging and Wellness out of.
[00:10:25] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:10:26] Speaker B: Your roles in sga?
[00:10:27] Speaker E: Well, so Hannah was always. She was. I always look up to her. She's always been a mentor to me and so is Aubrey. I love Aubrey so much.
They really encouraged me to try out for the role. And I am so Happy that I did or run for the role. But in Senate, I mentioned I was the head of the belonging Wellness Committee and I saw so many amazing things on that side of senate and it was so cool. I was able to partner with different programs around school that are pertaining to health and wellness and it was so amazing. I learned so much and it really. I don't know, I was really invested and interested.
[00:11:14] Speaker B: Yeah, that's neat. That's neat. So as a junior here at the university, what are some of the things, I guess from your experience that you valued in terms of feeling that sense of belonging and community here at the university? What are some of the things that have impacted you?
[00:11:33] Speaker E: Yeah, well, I was so nervous coming to such a big university. It was always a big worry for me. I've always really had Alabama in the back of my mind. I always really wanted to come to Alabama, but it was always a worry in the back of my mind of like, am I going to find my place or I'm scared I'm going to get lost in the crowd.
And it really scared me. So when I got here, I was really intentional on ensuring I found different clubs and different organizations to, you know, getting try and get involved with and it made the biggest difference. I feel like.
I feel like so many people get so nervous coming to such a big university, but there's so many different clubs and organizations that can make it feel so small and so welcoming and feel like home. And that was a really big thing for me. So.
Yeah.
[00:12:32] Speaker B: What, what other clubs or organizations did you start to look at and how did you land on this? You mentioned Johnny. Really?
[00:12:40] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:12:40] Speaker B: The sort of shepherded you towards sg, but what other clubs or organizations did you look at?
[00:12:46] Speaker E: Yeah, well, I mean I really got
[00:12:50] Speaker B: out of all the 700 some organizations, there's so many.
[00:12:55] Speaker E: Well, I really love.
Wait. Yeah, let me think.
[00:13:03] Speaker B: I know. So it's hard to remember back at that, back at that time.
[00:13:08] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:13:08] Speaker B: Kind of where you were as a first year student. As a second year student.
[00:13:13] Speaker E: Yeah.
Well, I've heard a lot of amazing things about best buddies. I wanted to get involved, but I was really busy first semester of freshman year.
But I've heard so many amazing things about how so many people love it and it's always been a regret of mine. I really want to. I really want to be a part of that. Yeah.
[00:13:36] Speaker B: So wasn't Aubrey Grisseff, was she in that program? Aubrey was like the inaugural VP for Belonging and Wellness.
[00:13:45] Speaker E: Yes. Yes, sir.
[00:13:46] Speaker B: And then Hannah and then now you.
[00:13:47] Speaker E: Yeah, yeah. They're awesome. I love them so much. I miss them.
[00:13:52] Speaker B: I saw you and Aubrey coming out of the student center and I was wondering, in my mind, I was wondering, I wonder what tips Aubrey was giving.
[00:14:00] Speaker E: Oh, she was. She's. I love it. She's always giving me advice. I need it.
[00:14:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:14:04] Speaker E: It's so awesome. I miss her all the time.
[00:14:06] Speaker B: What, what, what valuable pieces of advice did Aubrey pass down to you for this role?
[00:14:11] Speaker E: Well, I am really hard on myself, which I love. It's amazing. But it's also a little bit of a flaw because I push myself really hard. And every time I'm with Aubrey, I'm like, aubry, I'm so nervous. I don't know if I can do this, blah, blah. And she is so calming, so reassuring. She's like my source of, like, calmness. Honestly, if I need somebody to talk, talk to me, make me feel better, calm me down, it's Aubrey. She's always gonna have.
[00:14:41] Speaker B: Do you guys know Aubrey?
[00:14:43] Speaker E: Very,
[00:14:46] Speaker B: very like, like tangentially or something like that.
[00:14:50] Speaker D: We're like acquaintances.
[00:14:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:14:52] Speaker D: But I mean, I've only ever had amazing experiences. Interactions.
[00:14:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Great energy. She was the.
The right person for that role at
[00:15:01] Speaker E: the right time, I think, for sure
[00:15:02] Speaker B: to kind of get it launched and stuff like that. Yeah, we. So we have a. I guess a couple minutes left before we take a break, but could you tell us a little bit and we'll go into this in the next segment, but just tell us a little bit about the Capstone Wellness Explorer and then we can go into it more. The next segment.
[00:15:18] Speaker E: Yeah. Well, the Capstone Wellness Explorer is a student engagement tracking program that seeks to promote student engagement in all of the seven dimensions of wellness in the Alabama model. It's so fun. Throughout the year, there are events that are put on and each of them are. Each of them are within each or one of the seven dimensions, which is so fun.
We're so excited. We have the kickoff on September 17, which is this week, and we can't wait. It's going to be so fun.
[00:15:53] Speaker B: Yeah, that'll be something to look forward to. It's always a great event. It's always a great event.
[00:15:57] Speaker D: Absolutely. Well, I'm excited to get more into that because there is a lot of things that you just said that I'm not familiar with. So I'm so excited to learn about it. But yeah, we'll probably just take a quick break.
Real quick.
But stay tuned. We'll be right back with the BAMA Balance.
[00:16:28] Speaker C: Wvuafm Tuscaloosa this show is not a
[00:16:31] Speaker A: substitute for professional counseling and no relationship is created between the show hosts or guests and any listener. If you feel you are in need of professional mental health and are a UA student, we encourage you to contact the UA Counseling center at 348-3863. If you are not a UA student, please contact your respective counties crisis service hotline or their local mental health agency or insurance company. If it is an emergency situation, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
[00:17:11] Speaker C: What's up guys? Welcome back to segment two of the BAMA Balance. Real stories about college students mental health.
We've really enjoyed having Mary Kate on so far and we had just gotten into something at the end of last segment and I'm, I'm kind of interested. What do you, what do students expect when they come to the Capstone Wellness Explorer Kickoff and what information do they need to know about what date, time, that sort of thing?
[00:17:35] Speaker E: Yeah, well, the Capstone Bonus Explorer Kickoff event is on September 17th on the student center lawn from 6 to 9pm and there's going to be snacks. We're going to have pizza and popcorn and like goldfish cotton candy, Rita's. I think we're getting Rita.
[00:17:56] Speaker B: Oh, nice.
[00:17:56] Speaker E: I know, I'm excited about that. And we're going to have some like lawn games. I think we have like Big Connect 4 and Jumbo Jenga.
[00:18:06] Speaker B: Oh, really?
[00:18:07] Speaker E: I know, I'm so excited.
Yeah, we're so excited. And we have a bunch of people tabling and performing at the kickoff.
So we, we host this event, we put this event on for students to kind of come and see what amazing organizations or what organizations do throughout the year. And if they want to join one of the organizations, there's so many people who will visit the tables and they'll be like, oh my goodness, I want to get involved in this. I want to do this. And it's so awesome because throughout the year they will send us events and stuff to put on that pertain to the Alabama model. So it's so fun. I love it.
[00:18:52] Speaker B: It's a great, it's a great event. It really is. It's a lot of, it's a lot of fun. You guys haven't been. It's a lot. And then free food.
[00:18:59] Speaker E: Free food as well.
[00:19:00] Speaker B: So, yeah, yeah, I'll drop by because I'm coming back from a workshop that, that evening, but I should be back in time to drop by around six o' clock or so. Yeah, it's always a fun time.
You mentioned the Alabama model Mary Kate. Can you tell us a little bit? So the Capstone Wellness Explorer is a great collaboration with SGA and the Advisory Council on Wellness. And as you mentioned, sort of that's based on the Alabama model. So could you tell us a little bit more about the Capstone Wellness Explorer and its relationship to the Alabama model?
[00:19:34] Speaker E: Yeah. Well, so one of there's two paths in the Capstone Wellness Explorer. There's an organizational path and there's a individual path. And the organizational path is, you know, your organization opts in to have CWE points, their CWE points counted throughout the year. And it's so fun.
They will or members of that organization will come to all these different events. And it's great. Also, 11% of your block seating counts.
[00:20:08] Speaker B: There you go.
[00:20:10] Speaker E: So there you go. But the individual path is an event space path. So throughout the year, you and you will attend one of the. Or all of the seven.
Or that was worded weirdly. You will attend events throughout the year. Each one has to pertain to one of the seven dimensions.
[00:20:35] Speaker D: Like you have to get one of each of the seven.
[00:20:38] Speaker E: Sorry, I'm that I worded that weird. But yeah, it's so fun. It's super cool. But at the end you'll get a grad cord.
[00:20:46] Speaker B: So I keep forgetting about that. Grad cord. Right. So for the individual path, if you complete programming in each of the seven dimensions of well being, then you get a grad cord.
[00:20:58] Speaker E: Yes.
[00:20:58] Speaker B: That's cool.
[00:20:59] Speaker E: Yeah, it's super cool. It's so fun. I know. We're trying to get the individual path more out there. We really want to push it out there. I feel like more students gravitate towards the organizational path.
[00:21:12] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:21:12] Speaker E: But this year we're going to try to make it a goal to get it out there for more people to.
[00:21:17] Speaker B: That's cool.
[00:21:18] Speaker C: Yeah, that is really. I'm looking at it right now. I've got one question, Dr. Perez. I'm sorry. So like these seven paths, like academic, career, financial, psychological, physical, social, spiritual, like I get what you're like. So, like, what would a physical like me knocking out the physical part of the program look like?
[00:21:38] Speaker E: Like that would be, for example, the Wellness Society putting on or hosting an event where they are doing yoga. And if somebody wants to join or you know, wants to do yoga with them, that's a little bit of a physical.
[00:21:58] Speaker C: Sweet.
[00:21:59] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. I think a couple years ago.
Because you can have one or two dimensions covered, right?
[00:22:06] Speaker E: Yes, sir, 100%.
[00:22:07] Speaker B: So I think a couple of years ago the Counseling center hosted goat yoga.
[00:22:11] Speaker E: Yes.
[00:22:12] Speaker B: On the lawn. Do you remember that? Did you take a part of that?
[00:22:14] Speaker E: I remember hearing about that. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:22:17] Speaker B: But it covered both psychological well being and physical well being.
[00:22:20] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:22:21] Speaker B: And I mean, so I just observed.
[00:22:25] Speaker C: Oh, come on.
[00:22:26] Speaker B: You want to take part? I had no idea what goat yoga was. I wasn't dressed for it, apparently.
[00:22:30] Speaker C: That's awesome.
[00:22:31] Speaker B: But they do baby goats or something.
[00:22:33] Speaker E: Oh, yeah. So fun. I remember they did something last year with puppies, too. Oh, and it was so cute. There was a ton of puppies.
[00:22:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:40] Speaker E: I'm pretty sure a lot of people attended that event.
[00:22:42] Speaker B: Oh, that's a. That's.
[00:22:43] Speaker A: That would be.
[00:22:44] Speaker C: What kind of animal are you gonna get?
[00:22:46] Speaker E: Goodness, y'.
[00:22:47] Speaker C: All.
[00:22:47] Speaker E: I don't know. I feel like I've got a lot to live up to.
[00:22:50] Speaker C: There's so.
[00:22:51] Speaker B: I mean, along with that, what. How do you want to. How do you want to put your spin or.
[00:22:56] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:56] Speaker B: On. On this year's cwe.
[00:22:59] Speaker E: Let's see. Honestly, last year, there was. They were putting. There were so many events, which I absolutely loved.
And I'm hoping this year we can, you know, get more and more. But I do think it's so fun when it's a lot more, like, engaging like that. So maybe just finding an incentive for, like, something that'll urge students to want
[00:23:22] Speaker B: to come to more engagement, stuff like that.
[00:23:25] Speaker E: Yes, sir.
[00:23:25] Speaker B: How many students are aware of the Capstone Wellness Explorer?
[00:23:31] Speaker E: Well, we had. I. I'm pretty sure we had, like 2,000 people attend the kickoff last year, which is awesome. I'm hoping we can get more people to come this year, but I think a lot of people are aware. Obviously, we are always trying to, you know, promote it, but I feel like a lot of students know about it, and I do think the box seating situation has a lot to do with that. So it's great. I love it.
[00:24:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
It's such a great way to implement our Alabama model in ways that students can engage in, can participate in, and can gain something from, in terms of their different aspects of well being.
[00:24:17] Speaker E: Yes. I mean, I do understand why a lot of people attend these events for their organizations and block seeding, but there are so many. There's so many amazing things that you can get out of these events. I mean, I just. I love going to all of them. They're so fun, and I feel like I always learn something new about myself, about something. Another organization on campus. It's just, they're always. They're always really informative.
[00:24:43] Speaker C: So I know this is like really cool for freshmen that particularly. I don't have really any clue about half the stuff on campus. But would you urge older students to come as well?
[00:24:56] Speaker E: 100%. I mean, every year everybody's putting on different events throughout the year. And it's so cool because, I mean, you're learning something new about your campus. You're learning something new about the amazing resources that we have and the amazing organizations that we have around campus.
Yeah, it's so fun. And I definitely would encourage older students to join. You can learn so much about yourself.
[00:25:21] Speaker B: There's a lot of entertainment, too. Just at the kickoff, some different student groups participate with the entertainment. Yes.
[00:25:29] Speaker E: Yes.
[00:25:29] Speaker B: Who do we have lined up for this year?
[00:25:31] Speaker E: Well, we are still recruiting, but as of right now, we have AV Dance collective. They're going to dance for us. We have the Wellness Society.
[00:25:39] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:25:39] Speaker E: And yeah, I'm excited about that.
I can't really remember. I haven't looked on the list yet. But we have some great groups lined up. I'm really excited.
[00:25:49] Speaker B: That's cool.
[00:25:50] Speaker E: I know.
[00:25:50] Speaker B: That's very cool.
[00:25:51] Speaker E: I'm hoping to recruit some more.
[00:25:53] Speaker B: I was gonna say, if they wanna be involved, how would they be involved?
[00:25:58] Speaker E: Well, they are more than welcome to reach out to me or if. Or the Capstone Wellness Explorer email. It's sgacapstonewellnessexplorer and. Or, you know, DM us. We are always available.
We'll always answer.
[00:26:16] Speaker B: So we got Instagram.
[00:26:17] Speaker E: We have a Capstone Wellness Explorer.
[00:26:20] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:26:20] Speaker E: Yes, sir.
[00:26:21] Speaker B: That's cool. Awesome. Yeah, that's very cool.
[00:26:24] Speaker C: Yeah. Who knows? I mean, we created a spot podcast so you may get some feedback here.
[00:26:31] Speaker B: Maybe that's true.
[00:26:33] Speaker C: But no, we've really enjoyed learning more about the Capstone Wellness Explorer program. And the kickoff second segment was great and we're looking forward to wrapping things up here at the end. But we'll be back with the outro segment this Bam. Balance.
Wvuafm, Tuscaloosa.

[00:27:48] Speaker B: And welcome back, everybody, to our last segment of the BAMA Balance. Mary Kate. It's been so good to have you here as our guest.
[00:27:56] Speaker A: This.
[00:27:56] Speaker B: Is this. For this episode. I know we've got a couple more questions we just wanted to maybe throw at you to see kind of what advice or what information you can provide to us.
[00:28:06] Speaker D: Yeah, I mean, I. I'm curious and I know you. You just like, you only really just started because like when is inauguration? The end of the spring.
[00:28:15] Speaker E: It's like in April. So.
[00:28:17] Speaker D: So I mean you do a whole. And I first I was going to ask like, what do you. What is kind of your. The thing you've done so far that you've been the most, I guess, proud of or fulfilled by which you could maybe thus far that you have done, but also like, what are you looking forward to beyond CW kickoff, as we know is the most. Like. Obviously. Yes.
[00:28:35] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:28:36] Speaker D: But maybe something like that you're excited to do or get to be a
[00:28:39] Speaker C: part of
[00:28:41] Speaker D: in your time. As in sga, as the Vice president.
[00:28:44] Speaker E: Yeah. Well, that's a great question.
I've actually been talking with my or my friend and co worker, I guess Vice President for Academic Affairs, Madeline Herwig, and we have been wanting to put some students artwork all around the student center.
And we're really excited. We've. We've already kind of gotten some of the logistics set in stone, but we're really excited about that. I know Johnny had started something like that a few years back in Gorgas, but we want to kind of expand it and add on to Johnny's amazing legacy.
[00:29:27] Speaker D: That's so awesome. Yeah, I didn't realize that's like.
[00:29:29] Speaker E: We're excited because we have a pretty
[00:29:31] Speaker D: decently sized art department.
[00:29:33] Speaker B: It's pretty, I mean, cool. You have a couple museums and exhibition galleries. Yeah, it's really neat. It's really neat. And they're free. Just true, right? You walk in and.
Yeah.
[00:29:46] Speaker D: Yeah, I would think so.
[00:29:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. Some amazing art.
[00:29:49] Speaker E: Yeah, I'm really excited about that. I feel like it'll, you know, be a cool, cool spot to kind of hang out and it'll build some sense of community and I don't know. I'm really excited.
[00:30:00] Speaker B: That's pretty cool. That's pretty cool.
[00:30:01] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:30:02] Speaker C: I've got a question for you and this may take you back. You may have to think on it for a minute.
If you could go back and like, do something different or maybe just things that you wish you would have known as a freshman.
I know you had an older brother that was kind of able to guide you and toss you along the ropes a Little bit. But what are some things that you wish you could have done better, would have. Would have known that, you know, now that maybe would have made your freshman year a little better?
[00:30:32] Speaker E: Hmm.
[00:30:34] Speaker B: Well, seems like a lifetime.
[00:30:40] Speaker E: Let me think.
[00:30:44] Speaker B: Was it a. Was it a. Was freshman year kind of a challenge for you or how did you find it, honestly?
[00:30:49] Speaker E: Well, for me, I think.
I think like, freshman year, I wasn't really, like, in it. I was just kind of like, okay, college. I didn't really know what it was all about, so I was just kind of going with the flow. But I mean, I think I will say, like, one thing I would maybe.
Maybe change was.
I mean, I guess just to not be so hard on myself.
I'm just super hard on myself. And I think it's just. I think it's so easy to kind of get lost in, you know, things that you're like, oh, my goodness, okay, you gotta do this, you gotta do that. But I feel like I would probably just ask or tell myself to live in the moment and just be happy and great for. Happy for the things that I'm doing right now and the things I've done in the past, you know?
Yeah, I think maybe something like that.
[00:31:44] Speaker B: Yeah, that's pretty good.
So how much of that have you been able to. How much of that advice have you been able to follow now as a third year student?
[00:31:55] Speaker E: Yeah, well, honestly, I think being in this position that I'm in now has really encouraged me to take a step back and, you know, just tell myself like, mary Kate, you're doing great. I honestly think reassurance like that is so important, whether it's coming. I mean, I don't know. It's. I'm always telling myself like, you got it, you're killing it. Because honestly, for me, it makes the biggest difference.
But I've really recognized that in this role because there's constantly something new, there's always something going on, and I think it's really easy to just kind of get, you know, get a little lost in that. So being able to sit back and be like, it's okay. Just take it one step at a time. Everything's gonna be okay, is so important.
[00:32:42] Speaker B: So, yeah, yeah, no, I think. I think that's really. That's really great too. I. You know, one of the other things that strikes me as you're talking to Mary Kate is, is not only how you found your way to. To SGA, but. But really there's some family history, right? In SGA too, right? Your dad?
[00:33:00] Speaker E: Yes, sir. He was the SGA president.
I want to say it. Was it 1993 maybe, or somewhere around there? I don't know how I know that. That is crazy. I don't know how that just happened. Good pool.
[00:33:12] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:33:14] Speaker E: That could be really wrong, but it was last century.
[00:33:18] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:33:18] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:33:19] Speaker E: And Johnny was the vice President for Academic affairs, and then the following year he served as director for First Year Council. So it's.
[00:33:29] Speaker B: Was he your director?
[00:33:30] Speaker E: No, he was.
[00:33:31] Speaker B: He was, yeah. What?
[00:33:32] Speaker E: It was super cool. It was cool being alongside Johnny and all that, so. Yeah, it was awesome. I know.
[00:33:39] Speaker B: That's very cool.
[00:33:40] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:33:41] Speaker B: Well, you know, it's been. It's been great having you here with us, Mary Kate. One of the things that you may not be aware of is that we have a Bama Balance playlist. I don't know if you're aware of that.
We do. And it's up to over 100 some songs now.
[00:33:57] Speaker D: I think it's a big old playlist.
[00:33:58] Speaker B: It's big old playlist. And so we'd love to have you contribute to that. If you let us know what your. What would you. What are your top two songs that you might want to include?
And it's a very eclectic playlist.
[00:34:11] Speaker E: Oh, my goodness. This is. Is like. I mean, there's so many songs to choose from.
[00:34:16] Speaker B: Yeah. And we'll be sure to add them. But if you.
[00:34:18] Speaker C: And it's all over the place. It really is.
[00:34:20] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:34:20] Speaker D: There's no genre.
[00:34:21] Speaker B: I mean, it really.
[00:34:22] Speaker D: Nothing's bound by anything on this playlist.
[00:34:25] Speaker E: Let me. Thank you.
I'm not going to lie. This is kind of a tough question.
[00:34:30] Speaker B: You can share from whatever playlist you have.
[00:34:33] Speaker E: Okay.
[00:34:34] Speaker B: Let's see, you know, some of your favorite tunes or something like that.
[00:34:36] Speaker E: Yeah, let's see. I do love some Tate McCrae.
[00:34:41] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:34:42] Speaker E: But.
[00:34:43] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:34:44] Speaker E: I don't know that. Really. I don't know. Is this just random songs?
[00:34:47] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:47] Speaker D: I mean, whatever.
[00:34:48] Speaker B: Whatever.
[00:34:48] Speaker C: I mean, when I'm telling you this is random.
[00:34:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:51] Speaker E: Okay.
[00:34:52] Speaker B: So random. Whatever hits you.
[00:34:53] Speaker E: Yeah. I love some Tate McCrae. She's always lifting me up. Okay, let's think. I do. I always love some country, so. I love some Cody Johnson.
He's great. Riley Greene.
I don't know. I'm trying to think of. It's hard to, like, you know, limit it down to one song.
[00:35:15] Speaker B: Yeah. Goodness.
[00:35:17] Speaker E: I don't know, y'. All.
[00:35:18] Speaker B: It's a great question, but. So what we'll do is we'll narrow down on a couple songs. Be sure to include them as part of our Bama Balance playlist and would love to have you represented on there.
[00:35:31] Speaker E: Mary Kate Awesome. I'd love to be. I'd love to be represented on there.
[00:35:35] Speaker B: Thanks for being a guest for this episode. It's been great to have you and so much fun.
[00:35:39] Speaker E: Thank you so much. I've had so much fun. I appreciate y' all having me.
[00:35:43] Speaker B: Well, we appreciate it as well. And that brings us to a close for this episode of the Bama Balance. Real stories about college students mental Health. I'm Dr. Tony Perez.
[00:35:53] Speaker D: I'm Edward Film.
[00:35:54] Speaker C: I'm Brooks Barbri.
[00:35:55] Speaker E: And I'm Mary Kate Foster.
[00:35:57] Speaker B: And we'll see you all next episode.
