[00:00:42] Speaker B: Hey, guys.
[00:00:42] Speaker C: Welcome back to the Bama Balance. Real stories about college students, mental health. And we're sitting right here in Dr. Prez's office, and we have his monitor turned. We're in a different setup than we normally sit.
And I'd like to change my last week's favorite weeks of the year. I'm putting the masteries.
[00:01:03] Speaker B: Ah, there you go. This is such a great time of year, isn't it?
[00:01:06] Speaker D: It's the best. It really is the best.
[00:01:08] Speaker B: I mean, it's. It's. It's right after March Madness Final Four and in some way, which is a good thing because, you know, since we only got so far into the tournament, this gave me something to look forward to.
[00:01:21] Speaker C: No doubt.
[00:01:21] Speaker D: 100%.
[00:01:22] Speaker C: And I mean, just. It's perfect. It is like I would die to go there right now.
[00:01:29] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. And you. So you've not. You've not been before? I've never been so. Edward and I have been before.
My first time was in 97. This was when.
This was Tiger's first. That was his first year to win. But it's only on the. During the practice rounds. And I was telling Edward earlier that I had a close encounter with a wayward Tiger woods drive that almost hit me in the fairway. Yeah, it's pretty fun.
[00:01:54] Speaker C: I pocketed the ball.
[00:01:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:57] Speaker D: I should have said that. I wouldn't have.
[00:01:58] Speaker B: Should have jumped up and gotten hit by the ball and had an autograph.
[00:02:02] Speaker C: But at that point, did you know, like.
[00:02:05] Speaker B: Oh, no.
[00:02:06] Speaker C: How good he was going to be? Yeah, yeah.
[00:02:09] Speaker B: We just. I just.
I just didn't know. We just didn't know he was going to win. We knew he was good. I had followed him since he was in college.
[00:02:18] Speaker C: So you knew that he had a chance.
[00:02:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:19] Speaker C: Greatest. Yeah.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, I mean, I didn't know he would be that great. I mean, he was going to be good, but not to the extent that. That he's achieved.
But it was. It was. It was a great time to. To witness the kind of.
The launch or the.
[00:02:35] Speaker D: The Rise.
[00:02:36] Speaker B: The rise. Thank you. Of Tiger Woods. It was a lot of fun. You were there with your dad, Was it last Two years ago.
[00:02:42] Speaker D: So we.
[00:02:43] Speaker C: What?
[00:02:43] Speaker D: We.
We were there. The final round of 2024. It was incredible. The food is awesome. It's, like, so cheap because they know, like, they don't need to charge anything for it. It's just to get there.
[00:02:55] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:56] Speaker D: You know, we were. We were blessed enough to just be given an opportunity to go, but, I mean, those egg salad sandwiches were amazing. And I. And I kind of claim credit for Roy winning last year, because my dad and I, we. We didn't get there early enough to get any chairs around the 18th. And if you don't do that, you can't watch the end of it because there's so many people marking their spots.
[00:03:18] Speaker B: Right.
[00:03:19] Speaker D: And it's like you can't even see the last of it. So we.
We were like, well, we're not going to watch. Like, we won't be able to see the end of it, so we'll just try to beat a lot of the traffic. And we left. But we left with Rory. Like, we finished him out in his last couple of holes.
So I had to claim credit that. Because we did that, that's how we won the next year. He just knew we were right there with him.
[00:03:39] Speaker B: That's a good claim of fame.
[00:03:40] Speaker D: But it was a great time. It was. I mean, it's gorgeous out there. And I.
I mean, I'd go back in a heartbeat. I would literally. If someone walked in the store and now and said, all right, you get, like, you can go. You got a ticket for it. I've been like, all right, cool. I'm failing every assignment I have this week because I'm going to go to the Masters.
[00:03:57] Speaker B: So it's. It's such a magical place. You know, a few years ago, I was working with.
Maybe now, two, three years ago now, I worked with a young alumni here. His name is Jake Eagle Delta Chi. I think Jake was a member of the advisory council, but. But he's now an engineer for Northrop Grumman up in Huntsville. But anyway, Jake wanted to get connected with the university, and so I.
I asked him, how do you want to get connected? And he, at the time, was working not only at Northrop Grumman, but would take time off to work the Masters.
[00:04:38] Speaker D: Wow.
[00:04:39] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. And so he told me that, you know, there were a number of student interns that were there, and at the time, there was no one from Alabama there, and there needed to be so Between Jake and I, we, you know, we connected.
The Masters tournament. Not the tournament, but the Masters, people with our College of Consumer Health Sciences, CCHS here, we have an amazing hospitality program. Sports hospitality program.
And so from that point, we've been sending interns for our sports hospitality management program to the Masters.
[00:05:27] Speaker C: That's so cool.
[00:05:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:28] Speaker C: I even saw a stat the other day that went into depth on how much money the Masters, like, merchandise makes every second.
[00:05:41] Speaker B: Really?
[00:05:42] Speaker C: While they're.
[00:05:42] Speaker B: While they're. Every second.
[00:05:44] Speaker C: Every second. Yeah, it is like $700.
[00:05:47] Speaker B: That's. Goodness.
[00:05:48] Speaker C: Every second.
[00:05:49] Speaker B: Every second. That's crazy.
[00:05:51] Speaker C: Isn't it crazy when you add that up. That is a lot of money because
[00:05:55] Speaker B: you can only get Masters merch at.
[00:05:57] Speaker C: The Master was so smart how they do it too. Like, they make it this big thing that's.
[00:06:02] Speaker D: The store is massive.
[00:06:03] Speaker C: They make it a big thing because it's a little thing like. Because you can't.
[00:06:07] Speaker D: You can't do it and you can't access it. Like, they have two stores at the place. Two stores, and they have like the, Their. Their gear that, like, is like the. Their brand or whatever, which is the cheap. I mean, the cheaper of the two. And they have like, oh, well, here's a Peter Millar Master shirt that everyone's like, oh, well, I kind of want Master Shirt. And it's like, well, yeah, I bet
[00:06:28] Speaker C: people, they're about 10 of them.
[00:06:30] Speaker D: They buy 10 of them because not only are they getting for themselves, but I mean, there. I've heard stories where people, they'll go
[00:06:37] Speaker C: and,
[00:06:39] Speaker D: like, they'll get. They'll be like, all right, does anyone want anything? Yeah, they'll have a group of 10 people and they'll buy it for them and they'll pay them back just so they can have something from the Master.
[00:06:47] Speaker B: Right. Right. Now, Jake did that for me the, you know, one year that he was working. I said, yeah, give me a pullover. I. I need to wear that at some point in time. I'll wear that tomorrow or something.
[00:06:56] Speaker D: Maybe I'll wear mine tomorrow.
[00:06:57] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. And. And.
But yeah, it's. It's a, It's a great operation and so smart. It is, it is. So thank you to Jake for connecting the. Our sports management hospitality program with the Masters. And we're trying to find ways to obtain annual patron passes. So, Jake, if you're listening, just become
[00:07:21] Speaker C: a member, Dr. Perez.
[00:07:22] Speaker B: Become a member. I need to be able to play the game well. First, I think have to demonstrate, just
[00:07:28] Speaker D: save your whole salary for like 10 years.
[00:07:31] Speaker B: Become a member and that. That might get me an hour or two.
[00:07:34] Speaker C: Yeah, I'll say it's probably gonna need. We're probably gonna need at the lottery.
[00:07:38] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:07:39] Speaker D: But if I do hit the lottery, you best believe.
[00:07:42] Speaker C: Yeah, for sure.
[00:07:42] Speaker B: Do, do you enter the lottery for practice round tickets or patron ban? Yeah, I do that.
[00:07:47] Speaker C: I have the past four years.
[00:07:49] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah, I've done it since 97, I
[00:07:51] Speaker C: guess, and I'm going to try to get lucky one of these days.
[00:07:54] Speaker B: All right.
[00:07:54] Speaker C: So no, we're excited to be back and it's great for all of us to be sitting around this table again.
We've got a pretty exciting topic today and I'm. I'm looking forward to talking to it. We'll let Dr. Perez bring that up in the next segment, but we will be back. This is the M. Balance, Wvuafm, Tuscaloosa.

[00:09:12] Speaker B: Welcome back, everybody, to our first segment of the Bama Balance. And it's, you know, this, this episode is something that I think is going to be a pretty special discussion, you know, over the, over the past few episodes or certainly throughout this season and last, we've talked about, you know, certain movies and, and particularly movies that symbolize more than their content so things like relationships and meaning of life. And I think for, for us in this time right now, during the Masters, we're, you know, we looking particularly at sports movies. Sports movies that talk about and that symbolize the value of relationships or friendships and the meaning of life and how to overcome adversity and how to develop resilience. And I think all this sort of also comes on the heels too of last week's episode where you kind of talked about escaping stress and trying to find moments of quiet. And I think that, you know, movies provide us with that quiet time to be thoughtful and reflective of things that are going on in our lives. And so we thought we'd kind of talk about that and some of our favorite sports movies and, and what they've meant to us and what they've Represented to us. So.
So with that, what do you all think?
[00:10:45] Speaker C: Ooh, I. And I'm a big.
I guess sports movies were kind of my.
My jam going up. Growing up, I didn't watch other than that. I watched like Jurassic Park. I think I was never really Star Wars. I hadn't seen Star wars since I got to college.
[00:11:01] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:11:01] Speaker C: Like, I was that type of kid.
[00:11:03] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:03] Speaker C: I think Rocky, great movie. And all of them is probably my favorite sports movie.
From a learn something aspect. Just do.
Do mostly to one, you can see how he. How he grows up, how he lives.
You know, it's not the best.
[00:11:21] Speaker B: Right.
[00:11:23] Speaker C: And then two, like, his training and. And he was an underdog so many times and how his coaches talk to him.
Yeah. I mean, it just all came together to, to be a masterclass. But I mean, I think it's. I think it truly tells you a lot because, I mean, I've seen him get absolutely whooped in the ring and he just never fails to get back up and go at it.
[00:11:49] Speaker B: So. So is that your, like, movie to. Is that your go to movie when you're looking to find inspiration on how to overcome, like, obstacles or how to, like, just persist and things like that?
That.
[00:12:05] Speaker C: And I love Miracle on Ice too.
[00:12:07] Speaker B: That's a good one. I haven't heard that. That's a good one too.
[00:12:10] Speaker D: It was.
[00:12:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:12:11] Speaker C: Is a good one to watch. I watch it probably.
Probably once a. Once a year.
[00:12:16] Speaker B: It's pretty inspirational. Yeah. Yeah, I love that.
[00:12:18] Speaker C: Awesome. I love that the hockey team this year reminded me a lot of them.
[00:12:21] Speaker B: That's a good point. That's true. That's true. Yeah. Outstanding team this year.
[00:12:25] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: Outstanding team this year. How are. For you, Edward?
[00:12:29] Speaker D: There's this movie I really like. It's called Warrior, I don't know. And it's about. It's. It's mma.
[00:12:36] Speaker C: So.
[00:12:36] Speaker D: Okay, technically combat sports. Yeah, necessarily sports in the traditional sense. But it's about like, these brothers who are like, long lost. Not long lost, but like, they're both in this MMA tournament for different reasons. Like, one is like, literally doing it just to provide for his family, and the other one, yeah, was like, military and kind of running from his past a little bit. But it's like they're. They're brothers and they're. They end up like, fighting each other in the, like the championship of the tournament. But it's. It's like a really quick good story about, like, just brotherhood and I think resilience too, for both of them. They both kind of are different they fight different and they, like, have different struggles and challenges, but, like, they are both able to kind of work through it.
It's really. It's a really good one.
A little more under the radar, I think. But it's got Tom Hardy in it. He's a cool actor. So.
[00:13:38] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:13:39] Speaker D: Like Tom Hardy a lot. I also like.
I mean, remember the Titans is just fun.
[00:13:47] Speaker B: That's a good.
[00:13:48] Speaker D: That's a good one.
[00:13:49] Speaker B: That's a good one.
[00:13:50] Speaker D: It's a good football movie, I feel.
[00:13:52] Speaker B: Yeah, that's a good one.
[00:13:54] Speaker D: And then there's like, one more I'm trying to think of. There's a baseball one.
[00:14:00] Speaker B: Oh, baseball one.
[00:14:01] Speaker D: But I can't remember what it is.
[00:14:03] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. So when. So is that, like, again, your go to for when you need inspiration about overcoming adversity or resilience or is there like.
[00:14:14] Speaker D: I mean, I don't know if movies are my go to for that idea of trying to like. Of like trying to be inspired to overcome something. But I think I think about the. See that movie a lot.
[00:14:26] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:14:28] Speaker D: When I'm faced with something just because I mean it, you know, it's a lot. You gotta have grit and you gotta kind of sometimes.
[00:14:36] Speaker B: Right.
[00:14:38] Speaker D: You know, bite your tongue and.
[00:14:40] Speaker B: Right.
[00:14:41] Speaker C: I feel like most of the sports movies also go a lot like, with life in general.
[00:14:45] Speaker B: Yeah, I agree.
[00:14:46] Speaker C: That's one thing I learned looking back on my experience as athlete in high school and stuff. Half of those lessons and. And stuff you're being taught, like, that really does apply to your, like, everyday life.
Outworking people still applies.
All of it does.
[00:15:03] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Being, you know, so overcoming those obstacles where you least expect those obstacles to be and learning how to rely on yourself and learning how to trusting yourself.
[00:15:18] Speaker C: No doubt.
[00:15:18] Speaker B: Kind of thing.
You know, Rudy, as. As a movie comes to mind. As for me is something that's pretty darn inspirational.
Right? It's. And I love movies that involve underdogs that are able to rise above their situation. And there's something heroic about that, I think.
[00:15:36] Speaker C: You know, it was a great movie, isn't it?
[00:15:39] Speaker B: Yeah, I love that movie.
[00:15:41] Speaker C: I forgot about that.
[00:15:42] Speaker B: Yeah. There's so many good ones. Right. So for that kind of thing, you know, like, sort of give you inspiration. The. The other one I is.
It's a great baseball movie. Is the Natural. Have you guys seen that?
[00:15:55] Speaker D: Is that what they've seen? Kevin Costner.
[00:15:57] Speaker B: That's Field of Dreams, a different movie.
[00:16:00] Speaker D: But isn't he also in another baseball movie, though?
[00:16:03] Speaker B: Oh, that's Bull Durham, which is another great movie which actually is also about overcoming obstacles, being a part of a.
A not a D1 league, but a.
A farm league.
That's a great movie too.
[00:16:23] Speaker C: Have you ever watched Filter Dreams?
You have?
[00:16:26] Speaker B: That is such a great movie. Such a great movie too.
[00:16:30] Speaker C: As far as baseball goes, I think that may be.
I don't know if I'm missing anything that. I mean, that may be the. The greatest baseball movie.
[00:16:38] Speaker B: I think it's. I think it's one of the best. The other one is. So have you seen the Natural? I haven't seen that. So the Natural is about this.
Again, it's an underdog story, but it's about this older, not. Not in prime time baseball player who gets called up to a fictional New York team like the New York Lightning or New York Rangers, whatever it is.
But it's how he's had to overcome some pretty serious life events, right? Death of his father and some other things that pretty. Can be pretty devastating. But there's something about, you know, his dedication to the sport, the people who believe in his ability that allows him to find not only hope, but kind of redemption in the same sport. It's a great movie, the Natural. I would highly recommend it. And there's something about baseball in general as a sport. I think that that's very. At least to me that's very,
[00:17:49] Speaker C: I
[00:17:49] Speaker B: guess, philosophical, if that's the word, because it's sort of, in some way kind of represents to me this. You know, we're all. We're on a journey in life and we travel through different stages and through different parts of our lives just as we might, you know, visit different. Different bases, you know, baseball. But inevitably we all come home to whatever home is.
And I guess baseball is a journey about how to find home again, you know.
[00:18:28] Speaker C: I like what you did.
[00:18:29] Speaker B: That good, isn't it? Yeah, it's really good. I love it. I like. Let me tell you, I think about these things.
So I think too, in terms of, you know, looking at it, you know, how do we. How can we turn to movies to help us sort of manage adversity or help us find hope? I think, you know, for. For me, and certainly sound like the both of you. It's. You know, there are certain movies that transcend their actual content.
[00:18:58] Speaker D: You know, I agree.
[00:19:01] Speaker C: And I feel like half of it's just watching the movies in the first place. Like if you can truly sit down and watch a.
A movie that's not like, maybe not sci fi or something, I feel like you can pick up A lot about maybe.
[00:19:16] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:19:17] Speaker C: 11 people are living in totally different lives than you are.
[00:19:21] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:19:22] Speaker C: I don't live like Rocky. Rocky does not live like me.
But like. But like, if you were to put yourself in those shoes, you can. You can kind of think what they were, you know, having to overcome.
[00:19:33] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:19:33] Speaker C: During those scenarios and stuff.
[00:19:34] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:19:35] Speaker C: It's pretty interesting.
[00:19:36] Speaker B: Yeah. You put yourself in their shoes and you can imagine what that might be like. And. And Rocky was in some dire situations, man.
Right.
[00:19:44] Speaker C: Dude. Put on that little hoodie and started running. I was like, there's something either.
[00:19:50] Speaker B: It's tough.
[00:19:50] Speaker C: He's a beast.
[00:19:51] Speaker B: Yeah, it's tough.
And there are certainly more movies that we'll continue to explore here in our second segment. We're off to a good start here. We'll take a break. This is the Bama Balance. We'll be right back.
[00:20:21] Speaker C: Wvuafm, Tuscaloosa.

[00:21:05] Speaker D: Hey, y'.
[00:21:05] Speaker B: All.
[00:21:05] Speaker D: Welcome back to the Bama Balance podcast. And, you know, we're just sitting here, and it's hard to not talk about golf in this moment. Um, as. I mean, that's what we were doing.
[00:21:13] Speaker B: All of the.
[00:21:15] Speaker D: All of our little break in between as we are just sitting here.
I got the Masters on. Well, it was on a second ago, and then.
[00:21:24] Speaker C: I don't know what this is.
[00:21:25] Speaker B: Kind of soaking in this moment. What is this? This is like our screensaver or something. Yeah, I'm going to adjust.
[00:21:31] Speaker D: There's a screen saver that is. That is on the computer that, I guess it went idle.
[00:21:35] Speaker C: And it's.
[00:21:36] Speaker D: It's looks like the Arctic Ocean with a lot of icebergs.
[00:21:40] Speaker C: Yeah. My guess is Antarctica.
[00:21:43] Speaker D: That's not a place I want to be ever. So.
[00:21:46] Speaker C: No.
[00:21:46] Speaker D: Okay, now we're back.
[00:21:47] Speaker C: I'd want to be there, though.
[00:21:48] Speaker D: Oh, yeah.
No.
[00:21:50] Speaker C: Dr. Perez, what's your.
What's your favorite golf movie?
There's.
[00:21:57] Speaker B: Well, there's some great golf movies. There's some great golf movies.
I mean, a serious golf movie, I think is Legend of Bagger Vance. That's a good, great movie. That's a great golf movie. It's it. Because again, it talks a lot. It's a hero's journey.
[00:22:11] Speaker D: It's redemption.
[00:22:12] Speaker B: Redemption. It's a hero's journey. And then there's a classic one that I also think about this time of year.
It's less about redemption and more about fun.
It's Caddyshack.
[00:22:27] Speaker C: Great.
[00:22:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:29] Speaker C: That's one of my favorite movies of all time. Yeah, I've watched a.
I can't think of the name of it.
It was about this country club and these kids that were, like, in the surrounding areas. Basically a high school golf.
Golf movie. And these kids didn't have a lot of money. They were kind of broke, and they would just go hit, like, on a mountainside.
[00:22:54] Speaker B: Oh, I don't know that one.
[00:22:56] Speaker C: Finally they were able to get, like, sponsored and got a coach and these kids, like, actually got really good and. And they went into the country club and beat.
[00:23:06] Speaker B: No way.
[00:23:07] Speaker C: All the kids that had been playing their whole life.
[00:23:09] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:23:09] Speaker C: And it created this big ordeal, but it was a really good. Really good movie.
[00:23:13] Speaker B: Wow. I don't know.
[00:23:14] Speaker C: That was pretty powerful. I mean, they had to overcome a lot to get in that situation.
[00:23:18] Speaker B: I don't know that one. You know, there are a lot of.
[00:23:20] Speaker C: To figure out the name and send it.
[00:23:21] Speaker B: I was going to say. Yeah, let me know.
[00:23:23] Speaker C: I don't.
[00:23:23] Speaker B: I don't. I'm not familiar with that one. Do you have a golf movie, Edward, that.
[00:23:26] Speaker D: I mean, I would also say, like, Legend of. It's just good. Just good. Good acting is fun. It's fun.
[00:23:34] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:23:36] Speaker D: I mean, on a less serious note, Happy Gilmore.
[00:23:39] Speaker B: Oh, that. You know, I think that's a funny one. Absolutely. You got to have levity, too.
[00:23:44] Speaker D: Yeah.
I actually really like the second one, too. I thought it was. I thought it was pretty funny.
[00:23:49] Speaker C: I didn't love the second one, but I loved how all of the big names and like, that golfers were there having a good time. That was my favorite watch.
[00:24:01] Speaker D: The best part was when Scotty punches the dude in the movie and the police come up and he's like, yeah, I've done this before. Like, I'm used to this because that was one of the craziest things ever. Him getting arrested and then going out and winning a tournament that same morning. Like, that same day.
[00:24:16] Speaker C: It was pga, right?
[00:24:17] Speaker D: I think so.
[00:24:18] Speaker B: Gosh, you know, you're reminding me of. There's a new. There's a new. Relatively new series. I want to say is. Is it on. I think it's Apple TV about this underdog amateur golfer who then is spotted by a former pro golfer. And I can't. Gosh. And essentially the premise is, is that this sort of has been professional golfer finds redemption and being able to coach this younger golfer, this amateur, to some pretty amazing wins and tournaments. So it's. It's something about, you know, there are a number of different sports, I think, that speak to, you know, a life's journey. Baseball, I think, certainly is that way. We talked about that. But golf is something different.
Yeah.
There's something special about just that sport. Don't you think?
[00:25:18] Speaker D: Well, I think it's. Because it's. So golf is a sport. You know, we're talking a little bit about this, but it's. I mean, I agree with you. Brooks is the hardest sport, I think, because it's. It's one of the only sports that's not reactionary.
[00:25:31] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:32] Speaker D: Because even in baseball, which I think hitting a baseball, especially at the highest level is probably one of the most hardest things, like one of the hardest things to do in sports, it's still. You're reacting to something and it's like you don't have any time to think because you're. You're. It's all like, you know, fast second nature. Every sport is like that, but golf is so. I mean.
[00:25:48] Speaker C: Oh, you've got time to think in this one you like. Which is what gets right because you.
[00:25:54] Speaker D: You're thinking about everything and the ball is not moving. The ball is completely still. And you. It's like all. Like everything matters.
Just the slightest margins of the. The way you're torquing your body and trying to, like your impact, the way your wrists are turning, like it.
Everything matters. And it's all
[00:26:13] Speaker C: like.
[00:26:13] Speaker D: It's all. It's just like. It's all on you.
[00:26:15] Speaker B: It's all on you. That's right. There's no.
There's no opponent across the net or they're not other players out on the field.
[00:26:24] Speaker C: And.
[00:26:24] Speaker D: And even though you compete against other people, it's not like you're, you know, you're scoring more points so much as you are, like, you're just trying to play your best game.
[00:26:32] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:26:33] Speaker D: And it's your best game versus other people's best games.
[00:26:35] Speaker B: You're actually trying to score less points.
[00:26:36] Speaker D: You're trying to score less points.
Yeah, but.
[00:26:39] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean.
[00:26:40] Speaker D: Right.
[00:26:41] Speaker B: Yeah, but you're right. Exactly right.
[00:26:42] Speaker D: But it's.
[00:26:43] Speaker C: It's.
[00:26:44] Speaker D: It's not like football, where it's like, okay, your offense goes out and you scores. Your defense has got to stop through the team. It's like, well, if I'm playing golf against people.
[00:26:51] Speaker C: Every man for themselves.
[00:26:52] Speaker D: Every man for themselves.
[00:26:53] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. So it's, it's all about.
[00:26:56] Speaker D: Which is why I think there's a lot of analogy there. But also, like, I agree, like sports, like golf stories are always very inspirational because of the focus it requires. And I think about a.
I also
[00:27:09] Speaker C: think golf fans are the best thing ever.
[00:27:13] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:27:13] Speaker C: Because they're so respectful, too. It's a respectful game.
[00:27:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:27:17] Speaker C: You respect yourself, you respect the course.
[00:27:19] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:27:20] Speaker C: But also those, what they call them this week's patrons.
[00:27:25] Speaker B: Yeah. At Augusta National. Yeah, I mean, that's right.
[00:27:28] Speaker C: You know, they, they respect one the course, they respect the players and they respect the game.
That's really cool to see.
But it's also really cool to see when they go to like the Waste Management Open.
[00:27:39] Speaker B: Yeah. So much of a difference.
[00:27:40] Speaker C: And you get like, you get that one tournament where the fans can just go crazy. Right. And the golfers love it too, because they don't get to see that.
[00:27:48] Speaker B: That's right.
And you know, the Writer cup is like that. I think if there's a bucket list sporting kind of event that I still would love to tend to be the
[00:27:57] Speaker C: Ryder cup, that would be awesome. Yeah, I think I'd rather see the Ryder cup and go to the Masters.
[00:28:04] Speaker B: Really.
[00:28:04] Speaker C: In Europe, though.
[00:28:05] Speaker B: Oh, interesting. Yeah.
[00:28:07] Speaker C: I want to be across enemy lines.
[00:28:08] Speaker B: I can get behind that. Right. Yeah, I can see that.
[00:28:11] Speaker C: Be in the mix.
[00:28:13] Speaker B: I could see doing something like that.
[00:28:15] Speaker D: That's the only time we'll ever cheer for Patrick Reed.
[00:28:18] Speaker B: Yeah, he's in the writer.
[00:28:20] Speaker C: Yeah, he'll get.
[00:28:21] Speaker D: He'll get in someone's head too. He'll talk so much smack. But yeah, no, when they.
[00:28:25] Speaker C: This year when they brought out Forget who played together, I think it was JT and Bryson.
[00:28:31] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:28:32] Speaker C: On the first tee box. It was awesome. I mean, JT's a little talker, though.
[00:28:37] Speaker B: Yes, he is.
[00:28:38] Speaker C: He does not spare.
Let's go.
[00:28:40] Speaker D: When he's a little guy too.
[00:28:42] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:28:42] Speaker D: Just going out there.
[00:28:44] Speaker C: Bryson's freaking massive.
[00:28:46] Speaker B: So.
[00:28:47] Speaker C: No, I think Ryder cup is.
I think Ryder cup is a. Definitely a dream.
[00:28:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Wouldn't that be great? Yes, that'd be so much fun.
[00:28:57] Speaker C: It'd be cool to see it at
[00:28:58] Speaker B: a cool, cool course too.
[00:29:00] Speaker C: If you could go see it at St. Andrews or something like that.
[00:29:04] Speaker B: Like a real, like a link style course. Yeah, I would love that. I would love that now golf is a great sport. Those movies and I think really highlight sort of special. The specialness of that sport.
[00:29:18] Speaker C: I agree.
[00:29:18] Speaker B: And. And there's nothing like golf to also, again, challenge you as an individual.
It's sort of an equal opportunity challenger.
[00:29:28] Speaker D: I think there's a lot of self discovery on the golf course in a very unserious and in a very serious.
[00:29:33] Speaker B: So, yeah, no, you're exactly right.
[00:29:35] Speaker D: Ways where it's. It is like, you know, you're actually trying to learn patience. And there's also, you know, times where I'm. Where, you know, one of the more recent times I played, I went out and I was just not having a good day at all in terms of like, what I was shooting. So you got to the point where I stopped caring about my score and I, you know, I did a John Daly, took my shoes off, put my hat backwards. Everyone else I was playing with was like, like up there, neck and neck, and I was hitting, like, hitting last, teeing off in a par three with my putter, just trying to spank it as far like. And it was. And that was one. That was fun because I was like, you know what? Sometimes it's not about how could you do.
[00:30:14] Speaker B: Good for you. So was that.
[00:30:16] Speaker C: I get so mad out there.
[00:30:17] Speaker B: Do you. I was gonna say, is that like the, The. The most.
Like one of the most.
Not important thing, but one of the most memorable. Memorable things that you learned about yourself through golf?
[00:30:30] Speaker D: What. Did I get mad out there?
[00:30:31] Speaker B: Yeah. And how to manage it, how to sort of turn it. I mean, I get mad.
[00:30:36] Speaker D: I mean, how do you.
[00:30:36] Speaker C: I think.
[00:30:37] Speaker D: I think it. It depends. Like, you just.
I mean, on that particular day, I. I was very mad. But then I. It got. I was playing so bad. It got to a point where then nothing mattered. Couldn't I was like any worse? Couldn't get any worse. There are times where I'm playing where I think this is all that matters.
[00:30:54] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:30:55] Speaker D: But I mean, there. It certainly helps you. Like, I think more recently I've been able to kind of, you know, not. Not get as much in my head or worked up about things. There are certainly times where I've been, Mm, Very animated.
[00:31:12] Speaker B: Very animated out there. Used to have a friend of mine growing up. His name is Chip, and.
And he. And his brother Mike, my best friend, was a great golfer. Chip was an okay golfer. He was good. He was good.
But I think, you know, his rule was also that once he ran out of balls, he was not going to play anymore. And so we would just keep filling his bag with sort of balls we had.
[00:31:34] Speaker C: And so this joker was having to play.
[00:31:37] Speaker B: Exactly, exactly. So, you know, maybe a couple of range balls there.
[00:31:41] Speaker C: That is hilarious.
[00:31:42] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:42] Speaker C: So.
[00:31:42] Speaker B: But, you know, but it's that kind of. I think the specialness about golf for me is that it has become less of a self competition and more about having a good time with the friends that I'm with.
[00:31:54] Speaker D: Yeah, that is true.
[00:31:55] Speaker C: I'll never forget my little cousin that goes to Alabama
[00:32:02] Speaker D: one.
[00:32:02] Speaker C: One day, like over the. I guess in the summer, we get in the cart together and he's like, hold up, hold up. I gotta go run and grab something. I was like, okay. He goes in and buys a bucket of range balls.
I'm like, dude, are we about to hit the range? He's like, no, these are the balls I'm playing with.
He's like, I'm gonna lose him, so I'm just gonna play with these.
Mark, this joker played. He put the little range ball bucket back in the little bucket behind the driver's seat of the golf cart and was just pulling them out as we went and losing every shot. That is using range balls.
[00:32:44] Speaker D: So funny.
[00:32:44] Speaker B: That's brilliant.
[00:32:45] Speaker D: I've never even heard of that.
[00:32:47] Speaker C: I would.
[00:32:47] Speaker B: Never thought. I never thought.
[00:32:49] Speaker C: I died laughing. And he said, no, these are what I'm playing with. I was like, are you serious?
[00:32:55] Speaker D: Did the people ever like, you can't do that or did this? If they didn't see him, I guess
[00:32:59] Speaker C: they didn't see us that day. I'm not sure. No, he. He did this like he was a trained professional, so I'm sure he's done it before.
I guess he's never been caught.
[00:33:11] Speaker B: That's really. That's brilliant.
[00:33:13] Speaker C: Yes. Probably not the best thing to do
[00:33:15] Speaker B: on the golf course. Right, Right. It's not. It's not the best etiquette or. But. But I. Brilliant.
[00:33:19] Speaker C: Died laughing.
[00:33:20] Speaker B: That's brilliant.
[00:33:21] Speaker C: This is hilarious.
[00:33:22] Speaker D: It's really funny.
[00:33:23] Speaker B: Brilliant.
[00:33:25] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. Large bucket. Dude.
[00:33:27] Speaker D: If you're losing that many, like, why don't like, at that point just like, get lessons or something?
[00:33:32] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:33:33] Speaker D: Or have someone just like, whoever you're playing with, give them. Let them give you advice.
[00:33:37] Speaker B: There's also something special about this sport that brings out not only sometimes the worst, and it's brought out the worst of me in terms of my temper. Right.
But there's also something about it that brings out our desire to be heroic.
[00:33:54] Speaker D: Yeah. I mean, you know what I mean about that?
Yeah. Well, I think about anything playing A scramble. You know, you gotta be the one to hit the shot.
[00:34:01] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:34:02] Speaker D: To lift up your partner.
[00:34:03] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:34:03] Speaker C: Your team.
[00:34:04] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:34:05] Speaker D: And. And be the one to kind of get you out of a pickle. I think. I think there's a lot.
Clearly there's a lot. We've been going a while, but about this sport that you honestly could apply to a lot of. Oh, good shot, jt.
[00:34:19] Speaker B: Oh, nice.
[00:34:22] Speaker D: That's a long.
[00:34:23] Speaker B: But like, baseball, too. Baseball is, in some way. Is the same way.
[00:34:26] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:34:27] Speaker B: Right. That baseball. Yeah. I think it's the only sport that I know where.
Where defense has sort of control that ball.
[00:34:38] Speaker C: Yeah, I. I agree.
[00:34:41] Speaker B: Yeah. But then there's those.
[00:34:42] Speaker C: And then there's the heroic ones.
[00:34:44] Speaker B: Correct. Yeah. So the Natural is a great movie for that.
It's. It's a. They're great sports. Great sports. Yeah.
[00:34:53] Speaker D: It's all. It's all a good time.
Well, we're gonna go take another quick break, and we'll be back. Be right back for our outro. You've been listening to the Bama Balance,

[00:35:58] Speaker C: Foreign.
Welcome back to our outro segment.
This has been honestly awesome to talk about fun. I feel like the past two conversations we. Last week with Michael, I enjoyed it a ton, and this has been a lot of. A lot of fun as well. I do have a question for y', all, though. What do you think the best.
And this kind of just came up in my mind. What do you think the best sports feet would be?
[00:36:31] Speaker D: Oh, like accomplishment, what someone has done or what?
[00:36:34] Speaker C: Like an accomplishment in a movie.
[00:36:37] Speaker B: In a movie.
[00:36:38] Speaker C: What do you think the best accomplishment in a sports movie has been? And this could be. I mean, it could be a caption or it could be fake.
[00:36:48] Speaker B: A. Fictional or a real.
[00:36:50] Speaker C: Fictional or real life.
[00:36:55] Speaker B: You know, maybe. Maybe a real life one would be.
Is it 42? Is that Jackie Robinson? Yeah, I think that's all. That's a good one.
[00:37:05] Speaker C: That's a great movie, too.
[00:37:06] Speaker B: Yeah,
[00:37:09] Speaker D: there's. There's this one movie, it's got Keanu Reeves in it. It's a football one.
And I can't remember what it's called, but like the whole team goes on, like the whole football team goes on strike for part of the season, right. For most of the season.
And so they have. They hire all these like guys who are all like. I mean they're all basically like washed up football players to placements. Yes.
[00:37:32] Speaker B: Okay. Okay.
[00:37:33] Speaker D: I've not seen they make the play. Like obviously like the, the.
[00:37:37] Speaker C: The.
[00:37:39] Speaker D: They don't like. I don't. I think the movie ends like before the playoffs even happened. Like, the thing is that they make the playoffs after like grueling, like grinding out a whole season when they like had no business being there. And that was like the big thing. And I think if you think about that achievement, like if you put a. Essentially a.
Even like an all star college team against like the pros.
Yeah.
[00:38:01] Speaker C: They were getting.
[00:38:02] Speaker D: They would get. They would get whooped. And that team essentially was that. And obviously it's fictional, right? Yeah. But if you think about it, like, that's a. That's a crazy feat to do in football to make the playoffs as like essentially a minor league team. I agree.
[00:38:15] Speaker B: What's the, what's the movie about? U. S. Hockey.
What's that miracle? That's a miracle on ice. Thank you. That was another. That's.
[00:38:24] Speaker C: I'm 100 going. Secretariat.
[00:38:26] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:38:27] Speaker C: I think that's.
[00:38:28] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You don't think about those movies.
[00:38:31] Speaker C: Triple crown's insane.
[00:38:33] Speaker B: Yeah. Isn't it? It's amazing. It's a tough feat. It's a tough feat. And that Secretariat, once in a lifetime.
[00:38:41] Speaker C: Just a freak.
[00:38:42] Speaker B: Right.
[00:38:42] Speaker D: Well, didn't you have two hearts? Didn't you have like a genetic.
[00:38:45] Speaker C: It was supposedly. It was like triple the size of an average.
[00:38:48] Speaker D: Yes.
[00:38:49] Speaker C: I'm not sure how it.
[00:38:50] Speaker B: Right.
[00:38:51] Speaker C: They did some very interesting research on. On the horse.
But dude, that bloodline now and his like offspring and stuff sell for so much. Like, it is insane how much people pay for those.
[00:39:06] Speaker B: The size of that horse.
[00:39:07] Speaker C: Like millions.
[00:39:08] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:39:09] Speaker C: Of dollars.
[00:39:10] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:39:10] Speaker C: But I mean he was a million dollar.
[00:39:11] Speaker B: I mean. Yeah.
[00:39:12] Speaker C: Well over a million dollar horse.
[00:39:14] Speaker B: That's right. That's right.
[00:39:15] Speaker C: That's just how it goes.
[00:39:16] Speaker B: It's amazing.
[00:39:16] Speaker C: Smart enough to.
Smart enough to raise one like that. You'll sell them too.
[00:39:21] Speaker B: Yeah. Such a good movie. Such a great movie too.
[00:39:24] Speaker C: Horses are awesome animals too.
[00:39:25] Speaker B: Yeah. Gosh, there. And there's so many guy. And this conversation is also just reminded. There's Many other movies that kind of talk about the. Some of the same stuff we've talked about around themes of kind of redemption and overcoming adversity and, you know, giving us inspiration for life when it's sometimes hard to find that inspiration in ourselves.
[00:39:48] Speaker D: I remember that baseball movie I was thinking about earlier.
[00:39:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:39:50] Speaker D: The Sandlot.
[00:39:51] Speaker C: Oh, I love that movie.
[00:39:53] Speaker D: That's such like. That is one of my favorite.
[00:39:55] Speaker C: How do we not.
[00:39:56] Speaker D: That was one of my favorite.
[00:39:57] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. Yeah.
[00:39:59] Speaker C: Never realized until I got to college.
And I've rewatched a lot of movies that I've watched as a kid. Like, I will go back and fight that. Cars. Maybe the best movies of all time.
[00:40:12] Speaker D: Cars is great.
[00:40:14] Speaker C: Storyline's amazing.
[00:40:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:40:17] Speaker C: But I never realized how funny the Sandlot actually was a great movie. When they put that chewing tobacco in their mouth when they go around in the roller coaster.
[00:40:27] Speaker D: That is horrible.
[00:40:27] Speaker B: Hilarious.
[00:40:29] Speaker C: This 4th of July, they're like running through the neighborhood fireworks, playing baseball with. So great movie. Can't beat that movie.
[00:40:36] Speaker D: It's got one of the greatest quotes of all time.
[00:40:39] Speaker B: What is it?
[00:40:39] Speaker D: Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.
[00:40:41] Speaker B: Nice.
[00:40:42] Speaker C: That's true.
[00:40:42] Speaker B: Nice. That's true. That's awesome. That's a great.
[00:40:46] Speaker C: See, that's probably the difference between me and you. You were remembering that quote as a kid, and I was over here like, you're killing me small.
[00:40:52] Speaker B: Yeah, I know.
[00:40:54] Speaker C: Forget that quote.
[00:40:57] Speaker D: Also an amazing quote. But, yeah, that movie, it was killing me because I was like, there's a baseball movie that I watched all the time growing up, and I couldn't remember it.
[00:41:04] Speaker C: And then the lifeguard scene with Peppercorn. Wendy Peppercorn.
I mean, that was just a legendary, legendary.
[00:41:12] Speaker B: Yeah, that is. That is such a great movie. And didn't they had, like, some cast reunion maybe a year ago?
[00:41:20] Speaker C: Yeah, I've seen a picture of them, and they all look, like, totally different. It's kind of funny.
[00:41:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:41:25] Speaker C: Some of them look the same.
[00:41:26] Speaker B: Right, right. Can you imagine, though, to have been in that movie and.
And just.
[00:41:32] Speaker C: I mean, that movie had to have made a bunch of money.
[00:41:34] Speaker B: Yeah, I would think so. James Earl Jones was. He was kind of as a classic, sort of not cameo, but minor role. Minor role, but. But kind of central. Yeah.
[00:41:45] Speaker D: Minor in the sense of how much he was in it. But, I mean, in the end, it was a pretty big role.
[00:41:51] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. And there are probably a dozen other of those kinds of movies that be great if. So if our listeners have any of their favorite sports movies, let us know. Our instagram account, the Bama balance and stuff. So if. If you were to sum up, then maybe your top sports movie, what would that be?
[00:42:12] Speaker C: Oh, God.
[00:42:14] Speaker B: And it can be stuff we talked about already or some. Or other sports movie. I mean, I don't know. That's tough.
So we talk. We talked about.
[00:42:24] Speaker D: Go by sport, probably.
[00:42:25] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, we talked about this. I think the. The. The movie that probably gets me all time is. And we talked about this is Field of Dreams.
[00:42:34] Speaker C: That's such a good.
[00:42:35] Speaker B: Such a good movie because it has James Earl Jones there, too. That's another movie. James Earl Jones.
[00:42:41] Speaker C: I like Rocky.
[00:42:42] Speaker B: Rocky's good. Yeah.
[00:42:43] Speaker C: Tough for me to buy that. Field of Dreams is also awesome.
And the. In the real or the filler dreams they made and played that MLB game. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:42:53] Speaker B: The actual field.
[00:42:54] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:42:54] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:42:54] Speaker C: So cool.
[00:42:55] Speaker B: Yeah. That's neat.
That's neat.
[00:42:58] Speaker C: Then I'd probably throw a football movie of some sort in there.
Caddyshack's a good golf movie.
We've named some great.
[00:43:07] Speaker B: There's some classics. Right? There's some classics.
[00:43:09] Speaker C: No doubt.
[00:43:10] Speaker B: There are some classics.
[00:43:11] Speaker C: But, yeah, I mean, this is. And. And. And, you know, I use movies all the time to kind of give me a little peace and. And do my own thing at night and stuff.
[00:43:22] Speaker B: Great way to unwind and also to reflect back on them.
[00:43:24] Speaker C: So, yeah, this was definitely right up my alley.
I could talk about this all the time, but no, y'.
[00:43:31] Speaker D: All.
[00:43:31] Speaker C: Y' all have a. Well, by the time you'll hear this, it'll be Masters week gone.
[00:43:36] Speaker B: Right. We will have known who will know
[00:43:39] Speaker C: who the winner is?
[00:43:39] Speaker B: Who the winner is.
[00:43:43] Speaker D: I mean, I know who I want, but, I mean, come on, throw them. I mean, I would love. Just because you weigh. I'd love JT to get one. JT or Justin Rose?
[00:43:52] Speaker B: Yeah, I. So I'm thinking JT too. But, you know, then, now that I'm looking at the field, I don't know who I want. There's so many great. You know, here's who I want. So definitely Justin, right?
Justin Thomas.
But now, after learning that Freddy Couples is a year older than I am, you gotta go. I gotta go with Fred.
[00:44:17] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:44:17] Speaker B: Right. I mean, gosh, I gotta root for my own. I think.
[00:44:20] Speaker C: I think Freddy Couples is the favorite on this side.
[00:44:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:44:24] Speaker C: I'm pulling for Freddy.
[00:44:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:26] Speaker C: I mean, for Freddie.
[00:44:27] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:44:27] Speaker D: I can't.
[00:44:28] Speaker C: I can't.
[00:44:28] Speaker D: I don't even hate that. That's a great.
[00:44:29] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:30] Speaker C: I mean, nobody could ever be mad about him winning.
[00:44:34] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:35] Speaker C: Like, how could you be mad, dude? He has hairs white as snow.
[00:44:39] Speaker B: She's got more than I do. I mean, honestly, the dude is living the life.
[00:44:43] Speaker C: I mean, you've got Scotty, who is a freak of nature.
[00:44:46] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:44:47] Speaker C: Then Freddy couples.
[00:44:49] Speaker B: He's just there. He's just doing his Freddy thing. Smooth swinging and no doubt. Love it.
[00:44:56] Speaker C: But I'm glad we were able to have this conversation today. This has been a great episode, and
[00:45:02] Speaker B: it's been great to have the masters on in the background.
[00:45:04] Speaker C: Yeah, it's been a lot of fun. It's been a lot of fun to watch. First time we've done this, so there's just not enough for us to watch every week.
We'll have to. We'll have to really remember this one because it'll be good. Maybe do it again next year for sure.
But this will wrap up this episode. And this is the Bama Balance. I'm Brooks Barbary.
[00:45:25] Speaker D: I'm Edward Film.
[00:45:26] Speaker B: And I'm Tony Perez.
[00:45:27] Speaker C: Y' all have a good one.
Wvuafm Tuscaloosa.
